Project: The Green, Shirley, Residential Development
About the project:
M-EC was commissioned to undertake an Acoustics and qualitative Overheating Assessment for a proposed residential development.
The site was originally granted approval for the erection of a car dealership, so a subsequent planning application was required to demonstrate to the Local Authority that the site was suitable for residential development.
The site needed assessing in accordance with BS 8233, BS 4142, ProPG, AVOG and various Building Regulations. From a transportation source perspective, the masterplan design was for four apartment buildings along the north-eastern area of the site, which helped screen the remaining dwellings from road traffic noise, resulting in good acoustic design and minimal mitigation measures. From an industrial perspective, there was an approved car dealership and self-storage facility located immediately to the east of the site. However, there was no acoustic information available, and therefore, M-EC had to use extensive in-house library data to present an assessment of the impact on the residential receptors.
Due to the new Building Regulations, M-EC was then subsequently appointed to undertake Dynamic Thermal Modelling for Approved Document O purposes. The results of the overall assessment led to pragmatic and environmentally conscious mitigation measures to deliver sustainable housing for the local area.
