M-EC’s Acoustic Air services enhanced with the addition of SITMA pre-completion sound insulation testing.

Leicestershire-based M-EC has invested in a new accreditation for their Acoustic Air department to enhance their capabilities and offering to clients.

The Acoustic Air Team have been offering Sound Insulation testing for BREEAM purposes for several years. BREEAM sets the standard for sustainable and considerate environmental design with sound insulation credits typically achievable under Hea 05 credits. However, this new accreditation, known as SITMA (Sound Insulation Testing & Measurement Association), will enable the team to offer pre-completion sound insulation testing in line with the Approved Document E (AD-E): Resistance to the Passage of Sound, Building Regulation.

Pre-completion testing is carried out in accordance with the procedures and groupings outlined in AD-E, which focuses on new build residential, renovations and conversions where there are two adjoining properties. This test considers the airborne sound transmission through walls and both airborne sound transmission and the impact sound transmission for floors. The tests ensure that any partitions comply with the performance regulations of AD-E. Whilst many developers typically decide to construct in accordance with pre-approved partition constructions, such as Robust Details, various project constraints or bespoke builds require pre-completion testing to be undertaken.

Adam Walker, Senior Acoustics Consultant at M-EC, says: “As a multi-disciplinary consultancy, we are always scoping out areas to enhance our services to support our clients further. The addition of SITMA accreditation is no exception, enabling us to offer clients an all-encompassing acoustic approach for their projects and a high standard of methodology and precision for Sound Insulation testing. We’ll now be able to offer acoustic services from land bidding through planning and through to detailed design and pre-completion testing. The accreditation means that clients can be safe in the knowledge that all areas of sound insulation testing will be done correctly and in accordance with relevant standards and guidance.”

M-EC actively offers clients all Building Acoustic services, including pre-completion testing.
