An update to ongoing trials regarding the increase in the maximum articulated HGV length from 16.5m to 18.5m. As some of you may already know, the UK government initiated these trials in 2012 with an initial allocation of 1,800 Longer Semi-Trailers (LSTs) over a scheduled trial period of 10 years.
The government recently announced an extension of the trial until 2027 and an increase in the number of LSTs. In 2017, they agreed to add an additional 1,000 LSTs, bringing the total to approximately 2,800. This expansion reflects the potential benefits and efficiencies associated with longer-length HGVs in terms of reducing the number of trips required that reduces overall carbon footprints.
However, with the introduction of these larger vehicles, we anticipate potential changes and challenges within our industry. One significant impact will be the need to implement tracking systems for these longer-length lorries, which could affect both existing and proposed service yard areas. As a company, we're closely monitoring these developments and assessing the implications they may have on our operations, services and client projects.
Additionally, it's worth noting that drivers initially reported increased difficulty in manoeuvring the 18.5m long HGVs due to the extended rear overhang kicking-out, although additional driver training over-comes this issue, and the need for careful route planning. This feedback highlights the importance of staying informed about potential changes and preparing for any adjustments that may be necessary.
Although the increase in HGV length hasn't yet fully come into force, we believe it's crucial to communicate with our clients proactively. Rest assured, we are aware of these developments and are closely following the situation. We will continue to keep you updated on any further progress or requirements that may arise.
