National Apprenticeship Week

Today is National Apprenticeship Week’s ‘Apprentice Wednesday’, and an opportunity for our two civil engineering apprentices, Michael Webb and Jack Wills to share more about their training…

“When I was doing my A Levels, MEC attended a careers evening and it was here that I learnt about the civil engineering apprenticeship,” said Michael. “I’m currently on a five-year programme with Coventry University and am so pleased with my decision. Being an apprentice means I get to learn directly from fully qualified civil engineers and shadow them on a variety of different sites. I’ve so far learnt about highways, drainage, house levels, garden gradients design and the planning process. Knowing I’ll complete my apprenticeship with a qualification and ‘hands on’ experience is really reassuring; I’d recommend this to anyone.”

Jack adds: “My apprenticeship route was different to Michael’s. I actually found out about the placement with MEC through the National Apprenticeship Service, which is the government’s portal. We’re doing the same five-year programme at Coventry University but what I enjoy most about an apprenticeship is that I’m gaining first-hand experience and invaluable industry knowledge without being in debt for my education. I would 100% recommend this route to anyone thinking about a construction-related career.”
