MEC’s Transport Team Helps Secure Planning for McMurray House at Oundle School

MEC is pleased to announce that planning permission has been successfully granted for the development of McMurray House, a state-of-the-art girls' boarding house at the prestigious Oundle School. This project marks a significant milestone in enhancing the school’s accommodation for students.

Project Background

The development aims to bring boarding into the heart of Oundle by transforming the former Primary School site into a modern, 60-bed boarding house. The new facility will accommodate girls aged 13-18, providing them with state-of-the-art living spaces that align with the school's commitment to high-quality education and student well-being.

MEC’s Regional Director, Tim Rose, comments, “We are thrilled to have played a key role in securing planning permission for McMurray House, with MEC's Transportation Team working hard to ensure the local highway authority had ‘no objection’ to the proposal. This project will enhance the school’s boarding facilities and support its strategic vision. Our team’s careful planning has ensured that the future development meets the needs of both the school and the local community and we look forward to seeing the plans come to life.”

MEC’s Role

MEC was commissioned to provide expertise on the highways and transport aspects of the project, including:

  • A comprehensive Transport Statement was prepared, which included a thorough review of historical accident data near the site to assess potential impacts on known or emerging highway safety concerns. The team also evaluated sustainable transport options and accessibility to local amenities and facilities.
  • MEC developed a Travel Plan aimed at reducing single-occupancy vehicle use, with tailored measures to suit the school's needs. This included a "drop-off/collection management" plan and a "car park management plan."
  • Additionally, MEC provided Access Advice and liaised with the Highway Authority on behalf of Oundle School to explore opportunities for sustainable travel improvements.

Outcome

With planning permission now granted, the project moves into the final design phase, with construction set to begin in 2025. This development will greatly enhance the boarding facilities at Oundle School, offering high-standard accommodation to future students.

Partnerships

MEC worked closely with Smith Jenkins Planning and GSS Architects to ensure the project’s success. Their collaboration and shared expertise were crucial in navigating the planning process and securing approval for this exciting project.
