In our second feature, we spotlight Michael Webb, another exceptional Civil Engineering Apprentice who's been nominated at the 2024 Young Professionals Awards. Michael shares his experiences working on diverse projects, his motivation for pursuing civil engineering, and valuable advice for those considering this career path.
Can you describe a typical day in your role as a Civil Engineering Apprentice?
As a Civil Engineering Apprentice, my days are diverse and engaging. I work on a variety of projects, including housing developments and highway improvement schemes. My responsibilities often involve creating drainage designs, developing private levels and drainage plans, and working on highway vertical designs.
What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering?
In general, I've always been interested in the design and construction of infrastructure like roads and bridges. Engineering appeals to me because it's about problem-solving and finding unique solutions. I'm particularly drawn to Civil Engineering because of its potential to transform people's environments and improve their lives through infrastructure development.
What excites you the most about being an engineer, especially within the MEC team?
The constant variety in my work is incredibly exciting. Each day brings new projects and challenges. I'm also grateful for the supportive team of civil engineers at MEC who help me develop my qualifications and gain valuable experience in the field.
What are some key skills or qualities that you believe are essential for anyone considering a career as a Civil Engineering Apprentice?
Problem-solving is crucial, as every site presents unique challenges that require innovative approaches. Attention to detail is also vital, given the complexity and responsibility involved in each design. These skills are essential for success in this field.
What’s a project or accomplishment at MEC that you’re especially proud of?
I'm proud of several achievements, including passing my first two years at university and winning fee quotes. I've also received positive feedback on my work from clients, which is very rewarding.
What advice would you give to students or young engineers who are considering a career in your field?
My advice would be to ask lots of questions. There's always something to learn from more experienced engineers and others in the industry.
