NHBC releases updates to several chapters of the Standards

NHBC has this week released updates to several chapters of the Standards, reflecting evolving industry practice and a continued focus on structural performance, build quality, durability, and risk management. Whilst these standards are not statutory legislation, the NHBC Standards 2026 apply to every NHBC-registered home where foundations are begun on or after 1 January 2026, across the UK unless otherwise stated. As such, they are mandatory for developments seeking NHBC warranty cover.

Several of the more significant updates place greater emphasis on robust detailing, material performance, and clearer assessment of risk, rather than relying solely on prescriptive solutions. This includes strengthened guidance around structural durability, improved detailing at interfaces such as wall and roof abutments, and greater clarity where long-term performance and internal living conditions are concerned.

Commenting on the updates, Perry McEwan, Associate Structural Engineer at MEC, said: “Many of the changes reflect good practice that we are already seeing across the industry, particularly around durability, detailing, and long-term performance. The additional clarity within the Standards helps remove ambiguity and supports better-informed design decisions at an early stage.”

In particular, the updates reinforce approaches that are already widely adopted, including alignment with recognised British and European Standards, improved consistency across chapters, and a more considered approach to site-specific risk. The introduction of risk-based requirements in certain areas, in place of fixed prescriptions, reflects a pragmatic shift towards informed design and delivery decisions.

These changes provide helpful clarification and consistency, supporting better outcomes for developers, designers, and ultimately end users. We are actively reviewing the updates across our structural projects to ensure continued compliance and to support clients in applying the revised Standards.
