Adstock Manor is a bespoke residential scheme by Gade Homes, set within the rural landscape of Buckinghamshire. The site, formerly agricultural land with steel-framed barns, a horse manege, a Dutch barn, and areas of hardstanding, has been thoughtfully reimagined to deliver four individually designed homes. Spanning 0.75 acres, the development balances a sensitive approach to its setting with the creation of high-quality new housing.
MEC played a key role in supporting the delivery of Adstock Manor, providing expertise from the earliest stages of site assessment through to the detailed design of the new homes. Our involvement began with structural surveys and condition reports on the existing barn and stable buildings, ensuring a clear understanding of the site’s starting point.
From there, our engineers delivered a range of structural solutions, including strip footing foundation design, superstructure design, and the design of retaining walls. The superstructure design in particular required a high level of technical input, with the bespoke open-plan layouts demanding careful consideration of structural details to achieve the desired architectural vision.
A unique challenge on the project arose where the existing barns and stables extended across the boundary lines at the site entrance, restricting access for the new estate road. To overcome this, MEC carried out a detailed condition survey and report on the traditional masonry structures, providing calculations, drawings, and remedial advice to ensure their stability during partial demolition. Our structural input covered steelwork connections and restraints, reinforcement to trusses and posts, replacement of timber members, and masonry repairs. This careful approach enabled safe demolition and remedial works, allowing construction to progress while retaining the character and integrity of the retained buildings.
The barns and stables at the site entrance extended across boundary lines, meaning partial demolition was required to enable construction of the new estate road. To support this, MEC’s structural team produced a detailed condition survey and report on the existing traditional masonry structures. Our role also included providing calculations, advice, and technical drawings for the remedial works and partial demolition to ensure the stability and integrity of the retained buildings.
This involved the design and detailing of steelwork connections and restraints, steel reinforcement to existing trusses and posts, the replacement and repair of timber members, and targeted masonry remedial works. Through this detailed approach, MEC enabled the safe execution of demolition and remedial activity, allowing the development to move forward while protecting the character and quality of the original structures.
