MEC’s civils team is pleased to have partnered with Erith Engineers to deliver essential infrastructure design for the new Sunset Studios in North London.
Sunset Studios is expanding with a brand-new, world-class studio in North London. It is set to become one of the UK’s most advanced and efficient filming locations, capable of supporting productions of any scale. The facility will feature cutting-edge technology, expansive green spaces, modern amenities, and ample parking, making it a premier location for film and television production in the region.
MEC was commissioned to provide several technical services for the infrastructure of the new studio site. Our team was responsible for the design of the foul sewer and high-voltage (HV) ducts before construction of the studios began. As the project progressed, we were further tasked with designing a temporary surface water management system designed to collect the water from the piling mats without interfering with the piling locations.
The surface water management system went through multiple design iterations to address the evolving needs of the site. Heavy machinery would be present on-site, so it was crucial to ensure that our drainage systems could withstand the site activity.
MEC proposed the use of crossing mats over the drainage infrastructure to allow machinery to drive across the site without damaging the drainage system or hindering piling operations.
To prevent ponding, which could slow down operations or damage the site, MEC suggested appropriate gradients for the pile mats. These gradients ensured proper runoff, further enhancing the efficiency of the surface water management system.
Thanks to our adaptable approach and collaborative efforts with the piling team, MEC successfully designed and implemented the infrastructure necessary to manage both foul water and surface water on-site. Leaving the site with HV cable routes and foul sewer ready for the studios to connect into when the build phase commences.
