Partnering with Defence

MEC holds the Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award, the first SME in the UK to achieve this in 2016.  We recognise the value that serving personnel, both regular and reservists, veterans and military families, contribute to our business and how the skills gained within their services can be transferred to support many of the roles offered here at MEC.

MEC welcomes applications from veterans, those actively serving and due to transition to civilian life and reserve force members.

We consider skills and qualifications gained through the Armed Forces positively and can offer additional benefits and flexibility for members of the Reserve Forces and Service spouses and partners.

Demonstrating our commitment

  • We support the employment of Service spouses and partners; advertising vacancies with the military Families Federations; providing flexibility in granting leave for Service spouses and partners before, during and after a partner’s deployment;
  • We support staff who are members of the Reserve Forces; granting additional 10 days of paid leave for annual Reserve Forces training; supporting any mobilisations with a framework in place; actively encouraging membership of the Reserve Forces;
  • We support staff who are volunteer leaders in military cadet organisations, granting additional 10 days of paid leave to attend annual training camps and courses; actively encouraging membership of cadet organisations; supporting local cadet units;
  • We support national events such as Armed Forces Day, Reserves Day, the Poppy Appeal Day and Remembrance activities;
  • We offer a 50% discount to serving and previous members of the Armed Forces on domestic structural survey project;
  • We offer work placement opportunities for recovering Armed Forces patients.

As a proud Gold Award holder, we not only offer these opportunities but also promote the work of the Defence community to both our staff and clients. We feel it is our duty to support the Armed Forces in whatever way we can.

Armed Forces Covenant

MEC is proud to have been the first company in the East Midlands and the first SME in the UK to have achieved the Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award.

The award is the Ministry of Defence’s prestigious badge of honour for organisations that have demonstrated outstanding support for the Armed Forces community, ensuring that those who serve or have served, and their families, are treated fairly.

MEC first signed the Armed Forces Corporate Covenant in January 2015 and uphold its key principles:

  • No member of the Armed Forces Community should face a disadvantage in the provision of public and commercial services compared to any other citizen
  • In some circumstances, special treatment may be appropriate, especially for the injured or bereaved

In January 2016, MEC was selected as one of the first 15 businesses in the UK to be presented with the Gold Award during a reception at 10 Downing Street with the Prime Minister and Defence Secretary.
