about the role

MEC is a multidisciplinary development technical consultant operating nationwide, with offices in Birmingham, Brighton and Leicester. We specialise in delivering technical services to a diverse range of private and public sector clients across various industries, including residential, commercial, industrial, retail, leisure, education, and healthcare.

We are seeking a Senior Geo-Environmental Engineer to become an integral part of our team situated at our thriving Leicestershire office.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Management of ground investigation, geotechnical and geo-environmental projects across a broad range of sectors, including residential, commercial, industrial and the public sector;
  • Assist the Associate Director and/or Regional Director with operation of the regional office to meet the productivity and growth aspirations of the company. Potential to progress to Associate, subject to meeting targets, goals and KPIs;
  • Management of projects in full accordance with company standards including administration, client liaison, quality, fee proposals, budgeting, resource management, team briefing and invoicing;
  • Liaison and co-operative working with other staff and colleagues in other disciplines;
  • Environmental risk assessments (desk studies), intrusive ground investigations, land remediation risk assessments, remediation verification reports and geotechnical design work;
  • Prepare and review calculations, technical documents, reports, and correspondence produced by the team to ensure delivery of quality, accurate and efficient work which has undergone rigorous checking procedures. Ensure all team members follow the same procedures;
  • Submission of reports/designs for third party approvals which require pro-active communication with clients, authorities, and other agencies to ensure projects are completed to deadlines and budgets;
  • Site visits for inspections or investigation work; attendance at meetings with the team, clients, and suppliers;
  • Work closely with Associate, Associate Director, and Regional Director to develop business strategies to deliver the aims of the company;
  • Working within all offices as and when required, working additional hours if necessary to deliver all responsibilities and to attend meetings/events.

Key Skills & Attributes:

  • Management, where required, of multi-disciplinary projects across numerous work streams offered by the business;
  • Maintaining and developing department standards, systems, and procedures.
  • Key client care responsibilities including regular communication both internally and externally, obtaining feedback on performance, agreeing fee proposals and timescales;
  • Ensure team liaise fully with clients, other staff members and statutory bodies including Planning Authorities, Highway Authorities, Drainage Authorities, Environment Agency, etc to ensure efficient progress with commissions and reflecting a positive image of the business;
  • Research and development of technological innovations to aid continual growth and diversity;
  • Assist the Associate, Associate Director, and Regional Director to prepare business plans in accordance with company financial projection targets;
  • Optimising opportunities with existing clients though effective communication, quality, and timely delivery;
  • Pursuit of opportunities with new clients and diversification through new sectors;
  • Actively promote the image and profile of the business through active marketing including networking;
  • Follow a continued professional development/programme of training and achieve a minimum of 12 days continuing professional development (CPD) per year;
  • Provide supervision, guidance, and advice, ensuring all team members follow a continued professional development/programme of training. Assist with structured training programme for apprentices, graduates, and other technical staff in accordance with industry standards and company objectives;
  • Undertaking staff 1-2-1s and performance reviews;
  • Lead by example and encourage and promote a strong culture in terms of Health and Safety;
  • Compliance with Designer’s responsibilities under the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015.
  • Working understanding of site/construction safety;
  • Maintain valid CSCS Card.
  • Other duties as may occasionally be required to support the needs of the business.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Educated to a minimum standard of Degree in Geology, Civil Engineering or Environmental engineering or similar;
  • Professional member of Geological Society, CIWEM or similar;
  • Knowledge of soil geotechnical properties. Competent at exploratory hole logging and sampling;
  • Knowledge of contamination investigation, analysis, and interpretation;
  • Knowledge of ground investigation techniques and the relevant plant and equipment used;
  • Comfortable making clear and decisive decisions on site to ensure investigations can be completed smoothly and all key information can be obtained;
  • Knowledge of current legislation, regulations, best practice, NHBC Standards etc;
  • Proficient in the use of proprietary borehole logging software (Holebase, Openground etc.);
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft Office;
  • Excellent written skills, particularly report writing and client liaison;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to present information in detail to Directors, senior management team and staff;
  • Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team. This will also involve working with various other disciplines and offices within MEC and external organisations;
  • Self-motivated individual with desire to not only work within the company but also have ambition to help it grow and develop. Mentoring/supervision of trainee staff to develop their knowledge and skills;
  • Hold full clean driving licence and have own private car with insurance for business use.
