Despite there being nearly 12,000 more female professional engineers than in 2016, women still only make up 11% of the total engineering sector. M-EC apprentice Husna Gul is playing her part in helping to improve that by pursuing a career as a Civil Engineer via the apprenticeship route.

20-year-old Husna, having obtained GCSE’s and A Levels, began her apprenticeship aged 18. She is now working her way towards a degree in Civil Engineering through M-EC, one of the UK’s leading consulting development engineers. She is currently at HNC Level 1 and has four more years to go until she receives her degree.

Husna’s decision to begin an apprenticeship came despite receiving numerous offers from Universities to study Civil Engineering.

Husna comments: “I never knew that an apprenticeship in Civil Engineering was possible until I had completed my A-Levels. After learning more about it, I really liked the fact I could gain so much experience in such a short space of time and that you have a job whilst working towards a degree. I’ve always been a practical learner, so the apprenticeship route has suited me perfectly.”

Husna is excelling in her apprenticeship and is enjoying blending working with her studies. She believes that more young people should consider the apprenticeship route and comments: “Having spent over a year as an apprentice, I can see first-hand the fantastic opportunities that have come my way. No two days are the same and I am acquiring a valuable education whilst also earning a wage that gives me independence.”

Also, on M-EC’s apprenticeship scheme are David Moffatt, George Fearn, Taylor Worringham and Joe Landers

David Moffatt - 22-Year-old David is currently a Civil Engineering Technician in M-EC’s Leeds office. He began his apprenticeship having worked for a couple of years after completing his A levels and he is currently working towards his HNC in Construction and the Built Environment.

George Fearn – Also 22 and an apprentice Civil Engineering Technician. After completing his A Levels, he spent a year working for a logistics company before starting his apprenticeship with M-EC. George is also studying towards an HNC in Construction and the Built Environment.

Taylor Worringham – 21-Year-old Taylor joined M-EC aged 16 through his local college. He is a Civil Engineering Technician and has ONC, NVQ Level 3, and HNC qualifications. He is set to complete his HND and Level 5 NVQ this year.

Joe Landers – At 25, Joe is M-EC oldest apprentice having joined the company as an apprentice surveyor in 2014 after completing his A Levels and a year in a software development company. Joe has developed his skillset rapidly and in 2018 became M-EC’s lead aerial mapping surveyor after gaining his Permission for Commercial Operations from the Civil Aviation Authority, also known as a drone licence. Joe is studying towards his HND Level 5 in Construction and the Built Environment.
