m-ec football team collecting rtpi west midlands 5-a-side trophy

After countless years of hurt and quarter final exits for M-EC at the RTPI West Midlands 5-a-side tournament in Birmingham, 2019 truly was ‘our year’ as the team brought home the trophy in a no-nonsense, undefeated campaign.

Despite featuring three new faces, the eight-man squad were straight to business beating Turley 3-0, before seeing off Pegasus Planning Group 7-0, followed by a narrower victory over L&Q Estates 2-0 and securing their place in the Quarter Finals by beating No 5 Barristers Chambers 4-1.

That goal by No 5 would be the only one conceded by M-EC’s goalkeeper and co-founder Alex Bennett.

Into the Quarter Finals and M-EC started strong with a 4-0 victory of Stratford on Avon District Council but fatigue started to set in as they narrowly beat Turley 1-0 in the Semi Final and sealed the title with a 1-0 win over Bellway in the Final.

Captain Alex Bennett said: “We were confident going into the tournament, but then we’ve been confident every year we’ve entered! We played as team, rotating our squad in each game and using subs when we started to tire; that was the key to our victory!”

Team (L-R): Danny Hinds, Joseph Landers, Jonathan Heron, Troy Owen, Alex Bennett (captain), David Burton, Nathan Broomfield and James Lewis.
