Utilities

Recent Utilities Projects

Our Utilities team supports development by providing clear, practical advice on existing infrastructure and new service requirements from early feasibility through to construction. Working with key utility providers across the UK, the team identifies constraints, confirms available capacity and develops coordinated strategies for connections and diversions. By understanding utility requirements early, MEC helps reduce risk, control costs and ensure developments are deliverable and future-ready.

Capacity assessments

Understanding available capacity within existing utility networks is essential at an early stage of development. MEC undertakes capacity assessments to identify whether existing infrastructure can support proposed developments and where connections are likely to be made. By engaging with utility providers and assessing potential reinforcement requirements, we help highlight risks, costs and programme implications, supporting informed decision-making from the outset.

Diversion assessments

Existing utilities can present significant constraints to development and may require diversion or protection. MEC assesses the impact of existing apparatus on proposed layouts, identifying potential conflicts and advising on diversion requirements. By establishing costs, timescales and alternative solutions early, we help minimise disruption, avoid unexpected costs and support efficient project delivery.

Constraints plans

Constraints plans provide a clear and coordinated overview of existing utilities across a site. MEC collates data from utility providers and surveys to produce plans that identify infrastructure locations, easements and safe working distances. These plans help inform site layout, highlight potential conflicts and support design teams in developing practical and compliant solutions.

Combined service layouts

Coordinating new utility connections is critical to avoiding clashes and ensuring efficient installation on site. MEC prepares combined service layouts that bring together proposed utility designs into a single, coordinated plan. This approach helps identify potential conflicts early, supports construction planning and provides a clear reference for delivery on site.

Locating existing utilities

Accurately locating existing utilities is essential for safe and efficient development. MEC’s in-house Geomatics team undertakes non-intrusive surveys to identify the position and depth of underground services. This improves the accuracy of available data, reduces risk during construction and supports informed design decisions.

New connections & disconnections

MEC supports clients in securing new utility connections and managing disconnections by liaising with both statutory and independent providers. We obtain and review quotes, compare options and advise on the most cost-effective and practical solutions. By managing this process on behalf of clients, we help streamline delivery, reduce uncertainty and support successful project outcomes.
