Acoustics

Recent Acoustic Projects

Our dedicated Acoustics team supports development by assessing and managing the impact of noise, vibration and overheating on new and existing sites. Working across residential, commercial and mixed-use developments, the team provides practical solutions that meet planning and Building Regulations while supporting occupant comfort and wellbeing.

Noise / vibration surveys and assessments

Noise and vibration can significantly influence development suitability and design. MEC undertakes environmental noise and vibration surveys to assess existing conditions and potential impacts from surrounding sources such as transport or commercial activity. Using recognised standards and guidance, our team provides clear recommendations and mitigation strategies to support planning applications, and disputes to ensure new and existing developments meet regulatory requirements.

Overheating assessments

Overheating is an increasingly important consideration in residential design, particularly in line with Approved Document O. MEC assesses the risk of overheating within developments, taking into account factors such as noise constraints, ventilation strategies and building orientation. By considering overheating early in the design process, we help minimise the need for costly mitigation and ensure developments are future-ready and compliant.

Building acoustic design

Our team provides building acoustic design advice to support comfortable and compliant internal environments. Working closely with architects and design teams, we help ensure new developments, and refurbish projects meet requirements through appropriate layout, construction detailing and material selection. We also carry out sound insulation testing and post-completion assessments to confirm performance and identify any required improvements.

Environmental Impact Assessments

Noise and vibration can be important considerations within an Environmental Impact Assessment, particularly where development may affect nearby sensitive receptors. MEC assesses existing conditions and the potential effects arising from proposed development, using surveys and modelling where required to identify impacts and develop appropriate mitigation measures.

Planning Conditions

Noise-related planning conditions can require further assessment, design or mitigation as a scheme progresses. MEC supports clients in addressing and discharging conditions through acoustic assessments, surveys, modelling and practical mitigation advice, working with project teams and local authorities to demonstrate that the required noise criteria can be achieved.
